@Zac is this a game I should consider buying my son for Christmas? He's a huge gamer but is it 9-year old appropriate?

If you are thinking about the holidays and the plethora of AAA titles released for Christmas between October and December 25th, don’t over look Titan Fall 2. This first person shooter genre is over stuffed. Between Destiny, Call Of Duty, Battle Front, Battle Field and a lot of others, I find myself screaming for something original, something with a little more personality. Don’t get me wrong, I am a Destiny fan boy, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare stands tall as a brilliant game. One of the best FPS’s maybe ever, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.
Titan Fall 2 is tightly balanced with enjoyable weapons and exiting movement mechanics. It takes everything good about the first Titan Fall (which was a great game with not nearly enough content) and builds onto it. More titans - check, more guns - check, more pilot abilities - check, more maps - check, single player campaign…yeah, and a solid one at that.
Single Player
At this point I have played through the campaign both on normal as well as on master difficulty, and I have to say I truly enjoyed it both times. There are only eight levels, but each one is split into sections that make you feel like it’s at least double that. Missions combine platforming titans and pilots very well, giving you a mix of pacing. In one mission you will have sections of combat as a pilot, areas of platforming where you use your jet pack to run on walls and traverse chasms, as well as full on boss battles against elite titans. Some have criticized the game for the somewhat generic plotline and cartoonish antagonist, but I found it endearing, almost like a classic arcade game from the 80’s or 90’s.
Throughout the campaign the banter between the protagonist Jack Cooper and his titan companion BT7472 is endearing, and at times even quite funny; so much so that I began to look forward to what BT might say next. And when the story is complete after six or so hours, you know what’s at stake and the appeal of the multi player is improved by that knowledge.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer is great! Think Call Of Duty plus 25 tune robots. The maps are well balanced and the experience is streamlined so that you have options to customize your loadouts to your play style, but even with a level one basic build you are always competitive. It is solid!
The biggest shortcoming of Titan Fall 2 is that it has so much competition. If you are a regular Call Of Duty player, then Titan Fall with all it’s weapons and inspired movement abilities might feel tired. It might be better than the latest COD, but it still falls into that same ecosystem. If you are a Battlefield 1 player, then you are looking for huge scale battles. Titan Fall 2 comes close with multiplayer modes like Attrition and Bounty Hunt because of the addition of AI controller combatants. But for the sheer size of the Battlefield 1 maps, Titan Fall 2 does not compete. Titan Fall 2 is a fantastic game that offers a solid campaign, finely tuned multiplayer, and battles at a scale that incorporates 20 foot titans splendidly. If you need something new to play my vote is Titan Fall 2.

My list of "video games Zac recommends" is not shrinking. Your reviews keep making me want a Xbox because they all seem like games my Husband would definitely enjoy (again, I like racing games only; but I do like watching him play). *increases the list...*
Thank you for an awesome review!

You are not speaking my language, Zac. :P My gaming skills begin and end with Donkey Kong, Mario, and Need For Speed. (Old-school, I know!) Although I must say, this is quite an extensive review! :)

As a high school English teacher, your video game reviews at least give me a little 'something something' so that I can connect with my 'gamer' students. Thanks!

Game of the Year.
It's sad that sales have kind of sucked. EA sent it out to die in the worst spot possible.
