Grace Unknown- EP 20- Love People Not Things

Dec 18, 2017 | IsaacHanson

With the Christmas Season on all of our minds I had a few simple thoughts about what has really mattered to me this time of year and the kinds of memories that really have lasted.

I normally post this podcast for Members Only, but I thought that considering the fact that it is the Season of Giving that I should share this with all of you, Hanson.net Member of not.

I hope you find this podcast valuable in your day/life and I also hope that you have a joyous Holiday.

Merry Christmas,  -ISAAC

I loved this Episode. The world is such a materialistic place and we need to stop putting so much emphasis on 'things' and like you said, make memories. So many people tell me that I'm wasting my money traveling the world and that I could have a house, new car, etc etc. But I tell them that I would much rather make my memories while I can.

I've been able to see so much more than other people my age or even those older, and yes - sometimes I regret not 'settling down' and what not, but Hey, I'm doing what I love to do - travel, see live music and spend time with my amazing friends - I'm just fortunate enough that most of those things go hand in hand!

Have a great holiday and see you on the Island - where I'm assuming we won't be having a UNO tournament? ;) haha

Over the last two years I have acknowledged and appreciated people more. I do acknowledge that two years ago I had just got my cat and, like you say, focusing on the experience, I chose to spend Christmas with him. Sure - I had my best friends come over later in the afternoon,

But last year I was excluded from sharing a meal with family because there wasn't room for me to sleep. So, although there is a bigger house, there are now also more members in my brother's family - and last year was hurtful... I've made my own plans with church members this year and, although they suggest I speak to my mom, the situation of how welcome I am has been clearly stated since I left a phone message that hasn't been replied to.

So I'll invest, as you put it, in those that actually want me around them... or at least people that say they do... but inclusion is at the heart of Antioch principles. Just last night I received a voice note on the phone thanking me for being involved this year and for giving selflessly.

That's perfect for every period of the year, but mainly this one. I'm feeling super stressed lately about, mostly, things but now that I took a moment to relax and listen to your words and thoughts, I realized they are not extremely important as I placed them in my life, this time of the year.

Thank you so much for this and a very merry Christmas for all your family.

Isaac, thank you for another great podcast. I found it so relaxing. Some of my most cherished family memories involve sitting around playing games with family  or watching them play. This year I made a few of my gifts for those closest to me, as it feels even more important each passing year to let them know how much they are loved. I want to thank you for being someone who made my year better this year, all  you do truly means so much. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you and your family!

I REALLY needed to hear this. CHRISTmas had been bittersweet since my father's death on 12/25/2003, and my mom's birthday is 12/31. I try to find the joy in beautiful days and remember the joy I my dad's face when my sisters and I opened our gifts CHRISTmas morning. Thank you Isaac! Merry CHRISTmas and Happy New Year!

Thank you for this- beautiful thoughts. This year has been really really hard- my husband of 15 years is leaving our five small kids and I. The future for us is so unsure, it's hard to enjoy this holiday season. More now than ever, I appreciate that my kids and I can focus on making pleasant memories, not stuff they'll grow tired of in a week. Memories are what lasts, being together and focusing on togetherness is what's most important. Have a wonderful holiday season!!

Happy holidays, Isaac!

I feel like some people don't really have a choice to invest in their relationships. I can almost see the actual love hanging there, waiting to be given away but there's no one interested in taking it. In my head, that's how good people turn bad... but that's a whole other episode...

You are one of the lucky ones, Isaac. I am happy you recognize it.

It was very important to hear your words today!

In this time of the year it’s very important to be focus in what really matters: people and experience!

Thanks for the reminder!

Perfect timing. Made me think as always. We are hosting lunch and dinner on Christmas day. I am not a sports fan at all, but this got me thinking how much fun we would have playing cricket in the backyard - textbook Aussie Christmas Day. I will ponder that thought. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours, Mr Isaac. I admire you greatly and i thank you.

I wish I could say I have memories of playing games with my family but it's not something we ever did (I wonder if the whole 'games at Christmas' is more of an Anglo-Saxon tradition?). Now that my parents aren't there anymore, I am trying to remember the Christmases we had when I was a child, and all I remember is the general atmosphere - certainly not what gifts I received.

So yes, Christmas really should be about people and moments, not things. It's crazy that we have let it get to this way - that Christmas has become an orgy of consumerism and waste. My husband and I don't even do proper gifts anymore - we just get silly things that have some kind of meaning to things we might have said/done during the year. We don't need more things - just more time together, and as you said in your podcast, (can't remember which one) life is very short.
Treasuring the people we care about is all that matters.
