HANSON: Brian Wilson and Sly Stone

Jun 13, 2025 | Hanson

This week we are reflecting on the musicians that have changed the game, and two icons that have said Goodbye to this world. In one week we have lost a two icons, Sly Stone, of Sly and the Family Stone, known for his unstoppable grooves and live experience unmatched by nearly any band over the last 50 years. His impact directly made it to our stage with songs like “Higher” which was an anchor of more than one HANSON tour sparking immediate energy and engagement from every crowd we shared his music. We thought the week would only bring one goodbye, until the recent loss of another legend, Brian Wilson.

Brian Wilson's legacy was cemented through the work of the Beach Boys and the incredible harmonies that defined a generation and went on to impact many more to this day. Back to our first concert singing a capella, we sang songs like “Fun Fun Fun” and we even had the honor of being asked to perform for Brian's induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame 25 years ago, as we performed possibly his most beloved song “God Only Knows” which remains to be one of the most beautiful and haunting pop songs ever released.

Wherever you are, music has the power to reach into your life and help tell the story that makes the journey that much more beautiful. We are very grateful we have had a chance to come close to some of these lost icons, and as fans we will be forever indebted to the brilliant and courageous creators like Brian Wilson and Sly Stone that set the bar so high.

This week, we hope you will put on some Beach Boys and some Sly and the Family Stone and remember just how powerful this music thing really is.

Thanks For Listening

Isaac, Taylor and Zac

I grew up listening to The Beach Boys as they were my dad’s favorite band! Every Christmas season I blast their Christmas album, along with y’all’s!! The world definitely lost a great one in Brian Wilson, but I’m thankful the music lives forever!

I remember my friend and I in my room listening to the Beach Boys as kids; singing and making up dances to their songs. Every time I listen to them it always brings up such wonderful memories. I didn't discover Sly and the Family Stone until later in life, but Sly is also a musician I came to appreciate. Both will be deeply missed.

I remember on one of hanson’s Pre Fame Albums there is a beach boy song called Kokomo

Some of my favourite songs from the beach boys are Surfin USA, California Dreamin, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Good Vibrations , Surfin' Safari and the two songs song Hanson have sang Kokomo and god only knows

I remember The Beach Boys did a Christmas album and it has a song Little Sant Nick which Hanson has on Their Snowed In Album

I remember Hanson sang a Sly and Family stone song think it’s on the Roots and Rock N Roll EP it was also was to have God only knows on it though it was taken off at the last minute

Brian Wilson captured the California sound both were musical geniuses who paid a high price for their gifts. They burned bright, with art they created at their peaks that became more moving and meaningful with time, only to see their creative lights extinguished suddenly through mental health and addiction 😍😍😍

I appreciate your tribute to these musicians who have recently passed. I appreciate their influence onto you guys as a band. And I hope y’all know (I think you do) how many people look at that quote and immediately think of Hanson. You are a band we have grown up with so we can’t help but think of your music as the soundtrack to our lives. It’s a beautiful thing 🎼

So saddened to hear that he had passed away. I grew up listening to the beach boys and I can remember my mom and aunt always playing their songs and singing along. ❤️
