X-Men Or Apocalypse

Jun 21, 2016 | ZacHanson

I think it’s safe to tell you all what I thought about X-Men Apocalypse, Spoiler Alert.

I had seen all the bad reviews that came out the first week or so and decided X-Men Apocalypse was not for me, but through a strange turn of events I found myself at home alone last week, when my phone went Boo Beep!

“You wanna go see X-Men tonight, word is you are lone wolfing it?” –Friend

“I am getting or whatever J love be world” –Zac

“Sorry auto correct, what time” – Zac

Several hours later as I walked out of the theater I had confirmed my original suspicion. Don’t get me wrong there were high moments but not enough of them, and far too many times when bad acting or plot devices got in the way of this being a really great movie.  I really liked First Class, and Days Of Future Past but this was neither as inventive or well executed.

Some of my favorite moments were the ones where Charles Xavier traveled to meet with Moira Mactaggert and when he welcomed Scott Summers / Cyclopes to his school for mutants. There is just something enjoyable about watching someone with that much power be playful, and treat other mutant powers like they were normal.  All of the new young X-Men were some of the best parts of the movie, Cyclopes, Night Crawler, Jean Gray, and lets not forget Quick Silver.  Just like in the last X-Men film (Days Of Future Past) Quick Silver was a standout with his comedic personality and super speed slow motion montages (even when they felt emotionally out of place). The unfortunate part for X-Men Apocalypse is all of these scenes make up a very small portion of the whole film.

Maybe the weakest sections of the movie was one that was suppose to be the heart breaking and full of motivation, the portion of the film set in Poland, when Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto turns back to his life as a villain after watching his wife and daughter die.  Throughout the scenes set in Poland characters are jumping back and forth between Polish and English and it just feels wrong, like bad accents.  To top it all off, when the Polish police show up to take Magneto away for his crimes they accidently shoot a wooden arrow right through his wife AND daughters heart… BOTH OF THEIR HEARTS AT THE SAME TIME! Yeah it was stupid. Magneto drops to the ground and yells at god and unfortunately that felt even more forced than the bad polish accents. Believe it or not I like Michael Fassbender as Magneto, but this was not good.

Can someone tell me when Apocalypse stole Doctor Doom’s look with the hood and the lameness? Who decided Apocalypse should feel like a sorcerer rather then a power hungry Darwinian shape shifting metallic man with blasters for hands? Not only is he walking around whispering to people about being his children, you can’t even tell what his powers are, he just raises his hand and stuff happens… So he is blue… and he gives mutants things they want… is he a Genie? Tear… More than any other characters the villains get the short end of the script in X-Men Apocalypse.  Storm… Lame with a bad accent, Psylocke… not sure why she would even be chosen as a horseman, Angel… another bad accent and zero personality, Magneto… well I like him outside of Poland, but most of the movie the four horsemen simply stand next to Apocalypse like four super powered bouncers. No lines. This leads me to maybe the most lacking part of X-Men Apocalypse, combat.

What makes Mutants different than humans is not the fact that they have feelings, or want social acceptance, it’s their superhuman abilities, but superpowers are not by definition fun to watch.  Don’t get me wrong there are good moments.  Night crawler is mostly cool poofing and teleporting around, and wolverines rather long cameo is well… bladey (I think that is a good thing). Xavier’s mental fistfight was awesome, though short-lived! But that is it.  If indeed you do go see X-Men Apocalypse you will reach the final anticlimactic battle and watch half a dozen mutant heroes and villains all with arms spread, and mouths wide, yelling and clenching, with special effects coming out of every which part and generally doing nothing fun to watch.  I bet the script read.

X-Men Apocalypse Final battle

page 1

Magneto - Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Apocalypse – You betrayed me?

Cyclopes - Uuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrr

Beast - Raaaaaaaaaaaaa!

(Xavier lies on the ground sweating)

Xavier – Jean!

Jean – Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

This is not a “bad” movie… but it is less than endearing and wholly underwhelming.  Save if for a rental.

I like your take on the possible script for this scene. I'd love to see a new segment added to livestreams where you guys re-enact some of your favorite good and terrible film moments. Like a Hanson Goes to the Movies.

I've been out of state for the past few weeks and haven't had time to see the movie. My husband and I both love X-Men so we are still gonna give it a shot. I really am hoping Marvel can get the rights back and remake all of these X-Men movies the way they should be made.

I thought it was better than past X-Men movies. I rather liked Storms character. Although the movie itself dragged on and had no smooth flow. I think most movies are the same these days anyway. I enjoy movies from the 80s and 90s. Movies today are way longer, no character build up, too many details not played well with the much extended time. Movies back then had less time frame, more character in depth, and less details. I still watch them at the movies just because I love going to the movies in general. I won't buy this movie though. Might watch it again when it's available on Netflix. By then I'll have forgotten the movie LOL.

Glad I read this. I was on the fence about seeing it in theatres or waiting to rent it. I love x-men but even the trailers for this didn't really grab me.

I usually wait for most movies to come out on DVD before I ever see them. My brother is an avid movie collector and he's basically our rental store, haha.

(And here is the link Zac meant to post.)

Well, looks like we dodged that bullet.  Thanks for the review, Zac!  Tuesday is usually our movie night and "Finding Dory" looks to be the best rated one out there right now.  I wouldn't mind seeing that, but the kids are out of school and there are reserved seats at our cinema...  Oh well, the weather's beautiful right now so maybe we'll stay home and cook out.  :)

Ah, yes, Reading Rainbow with LeVar Burton.  Our kids loved that show!

We saw this for my husbands's birthday (along with Batman vs Superman); both of which were also "yeah, sorry I left you for a week to go see Hanson..." ...

I believe I have to agree, while I overall felt the movie was okay there was a lot that lacked to me. I expected the first Mutant ever to be badder? He felt lackluster and honestly the four horsemen confused me. Magneto made sense and Storm made sense, but the rest didn't. They didn't add much to the story line in my opinion.

I did like seeing the beginning and Quicksilver was a moment of hilarity even though it was set up to be a big explosion. Seeing how Jean interacted with them and how even mutants were afraid of her was nice. Her encounter with Wolverine was quick and I did like the cameo a bit.

They could have done a lot better with the movie. I think my biggest confusion is...where does it take place? If Storm is the character that is eventually played by Hallie Berry then how come this battle was never mentioned in those movies? The timeline is what bothers me.

(To be fair, I have a bit of an OCD issue with timelines, comes from being a writer!)

I am so glad that I was just having fun watching Daredevil :)

This sounds like some great popcorn entertainment at home on a rainy afternoon :) Will be saving it for that occasion. Or maybe I will just wait for my upcoming intercontinental flights :D

Where you don't want to fly with British Airways or American Airlines by the way. Their entertainment ducked so hard!

First off, I know he's not exactly the same as the comics (who is really these days?) but I agree that Quicksilver has some of the best scenes. I am an Evan Peters fan also from American Horror Story, so it was exciting to meet him at a convention this weekend. Talented guy and scene stealer.

I enjoyed this movie and try to see as many Marvel movies as possible on the big screen, but I agree that First Class and DOFP were better. Random, but the one thing that really bugged me is that they kinda made it seem like Havok was the older brother when in fact Cyclops is. Their timelines just throw me off. And they mention their parents but a hint at who the dad is would have been cool for a future movie tie in. We need 70s mullets back... kinda.

I was super stoked to hear Psylocke was in this movie, and I felt like they totally underplayed her character. Big let down.

And I agree, the "new" younger mutants were great additions. Ok, I'll stop ranting.

Apparently I can't stop... Anyone else just become a bigger James McAvoy fan with each movie? He is such a good young Professor X, among other notable roles. His performance was solid.

I all honestly I Tend to have favorited it when it was a trigioly. After so many movies it just looses it's feel.

I am a sucker for X-Men movies. Grew up watching the Saturday morning cartoons, so I will see Apocalypse. May not see it until it hits DVD, but I will see it.

And PS: I think we should all start using "J love be world" as the new "peace out" or "see you later". Like:

"You coming to dinner later?"
"For sure. J love be world."

It would be so fetch :)
