Making Of Play: You've Got To Love Somebody

Sep 15, 2016 | ZacHanson

For years people have asked us if we fight... the shirt answer is yes.  What we do a lot more then fight is talk, talk around things, talk over eachother, and basicly debate the merits of almost any idea, but the details are really what makes the difference when talking about songs.

In this clip we are trying to come to concences about the perspective of the orater. Who is the person singing, and who is he singing too, and why.  It is suprisingly not always clear, even after hours of time spent because the lyrics and melody are often shifting like sand under your feet.  I hope you enjoy this rare look at a song stull unfinished, and I hope you all enjoy tomorrows stream.

Hahahahaha. I absolutely love these videos and loving the song and the sound and where its going, please don't shelf it.

Don't even get me started or let me in on this conversation,  oh heck no, I don't care if its coming from the man or woman's perspective, ..first off and plain and simple, if it comes to having to have a "pep talk" and/or trying to convince your other half, your significant other, your prince charming or your dream girl to stay with you or to love you or not forget how much they loved you, or the magic that you shared..that "pep talk" is something that should never take place if it gets to that point thats when the answer is crystal clear..if you have to give someone a pep talk or convince them of your value..you are with the wrong person and that is when you say,(I'm with you, Zachary! :)'frankly my dear, I don't give a damn..and don't let the door hit you on the way out." period.

Interesting.  It makes sense that you would have to create a scenario in order to figure out how the words are arranged and to whom the lyrics are directed...

Zac just turned into Katharine Hepburn,...(or Clark Gable),...or both...  Haha!

...And what's this about not hearing this song again for years?  (I hope that's not the case.)

P.S.  "Shifting like sand under your feet" would make a great lyric...  Just sayin'...

To say you have to love somebody in the context in that clip it comes across like neutered passiveness.Like the person singing is making the other person who's trying to leave seem crazy without making it obvious.there's a subtext in that phrase that's masking how they really feel .they don't understand but who cares as long as they stay . I get a exposure listening to y'all discuss the song ,like of course the person knows how you feel but the person singing needs to add more information that's not only organic but obvious . picturing a couple sitting on the couch with a bucket of ice cream between them . #ToDeep? Haha ;)

After my 'overexcited puppy' post, I should try to say something articulate...

1. The title is a little reminiscent of other songs. I keep thinking of 'Love Somebody to Know'

2. Love the guitar

3. Isaac's voice, well, come on

4. What if someone is single and can't find the right person? You can't tell them they have to love someone. That's discrimination. You might get into trouble for that. How about singing something less controversial, like eating cake? Oh, wait... ;)

I have too much time on my hands at the moment.

I took it to mean that love is something that is so important in our lives and when you find it, you got to hang on to it with all you got. You have to fight for it. Whether you have a solid relationship with the other person, or they are walking out the door. Don't give up. Or maybe i'm just a hopeless romantic!

It's interesting to see how much discussion you guys put into the details of storytelling. It makes me extra curious now who the "I" is in "This Time Around". Why is he/she in that ditch? And who is "her"?

Not that songs, or any kind of art form, have to be that straightforward. Maybe having a more abstract approach adds to the feeling of the song. If authors can get away with it (Anyone read Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake"?), why not song writers?

I think...I agree with an above, def Ike lead song. The bit we heard but I could be wrong based on not hearing the rest. Let's hope it got worked out and makes it's appearance in less than a month!
