Fish Out Of Water

Jul 26, 2016 | ZacHanson

It is late in the summer break, and we had exhausted most of the board games in our house and had finished all of the planned camp activities, so a few days ago we decided it was time for an afternoon movie.  The option for me was either to be left out of the candy and summer memories, or see a movie that might be less than impressive. I decided to get happy with the fact that everyone wanted to see Finding Dory.

I have tried to put into words what I thought about Finding Dory, but every attempt became a giant game of "reference it's predecessor" (Finding Nemo). So I am embracing it.  Finding Dory would be a cute but forgettable movie, if not for the fact it is the sequel to a genuinely great movie.  Where Finding Nemo is about loss, adventure, funny situational comedy, and a boy becoming a man, Finding Dory is about Dory being a screw up, but a lovable screw up.  Finding Dory has none of the animal humor between sharks and tank fish and crabs and seagulls, but instead has super powered beluga whales and acrobatic octopi.  Is it good? No. Is it ok? Yes. Will your kids like it? Most likely.  Is it a sad excuse for a sequel to a great movie? YOU BET!

Zac, why don't you tell us how you really feel. :(

LOL. I love that you're blunt (about some things). There's enough sugarcoating elsewhere in the world, if you can't speak your mind on your own blog then where can you??

I don't have kids so I wouldn't have gone to see Dory anyway.

I am glad to read this. I wanted to see this in the cinema, but I'll definitely wait for DVD. And now I know that I'll get my excitement from watching my kids instead of the movie :)

I think the picture that you have chosen a picture of the empty ocean. A referance to the emptiness of the movie? :)

Ah finally telling the world how you feel about Dory. Lol.

Pretty much my review of The Purge 3.

I was going to ask you to tell us how you really feel - but you said it before I could! Hahaha. Bummer about the movie though. I haven't seen it, but was kind of expecting this type of review.

Completely agree with you, Zac

@Chris I would TOTALLY go see that. Roald Dahl's books are treasures.

Its premiere is 28th August in Finland, I'm glad there weren't spoilers in your post, Zac! ;)

This is pretty much how I felt about "Minions". They're fantastic sidekicks, but as the main characters they didn't have all the feels that the original "Despicable Me" had. It was just a bunch of goofy scenes smooshed together. It was ok, but not great.

My daughter wants to see this so bad. I'm kinda dreading it. I am actually excited to see The Secret Life of Pets though! :)

I liked it as a whole, but it did not meet my expectations as a sequal to Finding Nemo. My daughters really enjoyed it and that's the main thing. I found baby Dory adorable and I liked the messed up bird with the bucket hahah.

I will have to make an objection on your review. I mean, I can't judge your opinion because we all think and perceive things differently, but I can't agree on your interpretation of the movie. Finding Dory is more than just being a lovable screw up. It is about embracing your flaws and making the best out of them for a good purpose; it is about loving who you are, and it is also about how love can make great things happen, despite all the obstacles that might get in the way, and in that sense it somehow stays on the same track of the first movie. Of course it makes a lot of references to Finding Nemo, many of us have been waiting for years for this sequel and it is sort of nostalgic seeing how much we have grown since that first time we saw Nemo on the big screen. But you can't compare both movies, each one is special in their own way. My advice for all the Pixar junkies is: If you've been waiting all these years for this sequel, go watch it, this is the time, and then judge for yourself. If you don't even remember or care who Nemo or Marlin were but want to spend a good rainy afternoon watching something cool at the theater, go watch something else.

On a side note, a teacher at the film school told me once (and has stuck with me ever since): "Movies are an art form. Art is a way of personal expression. You can't say that a piece of art is good or bad, because it means something for the person who made it. What you can do is to say if you liked it or not. Not all of us interpret things the same way. What may be great for one person, it may be bad for another."

"Zac, why don't you tell us how you really feel." :(

Talking to yourself, again?  ;)

I'm one of those adults who enjoys seeing an animated movie aimed at children now and then, even if I don't have any little kids in tow.  That one was a consideration.  Thanks for the insight!  Have you seen The Secret Life of Pets.  The preview looks pretty funny...

We saw Star Trek Beyond last night.  Even though the dialog, particularly in the beginning, seemed a bit stilted, I liked the film.  Not bad, as far as sequels go...  We had planned to see Ghostbusters, but I guess I should have bought our tickets a few days in advance for that one...

I dont remember the last time I saw a movie in theaters...mustve been 10 years ago. I'm debating going to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them when it comes out. And I've thought about Bad Moms. But I'm really behind on movies. This seems like a cute sequel that can be reminiscent for the parents and lovable for the kids.

My family & I are HUGE Disney freaks so I really enjoyed it & of course so did my 3 years old. I loved the octopus he was, in my opinion, the best character in the movie! The downside for me was after my daughter saw it, she wouldn't go anywhere without me or my husband because she was afraid she was going to lose us like Dory lost her parents

I've learned that almost ALL sequels to originals usually suck lol. Anyways, I'll probably watch this when it reached Tvland at some point. Instead, I rather go to the theater and watch the new Startrek movie that's out, now that looks way cooler.  c:

I was crying almost as much as I was when I saw Frozen, I was sobbing uncontrollably. I thought the movie was rather sad, I felt Dory's pain.

I loved the movie a lot! Sure it was lacking in heart, but it was cute! Plus there's a whole new set of catch phrases for the younger generation to use.

Glad to know it's not worth it. I would, however, love to see The Secret Life of Pets and The BFG. I read The BFG to my class last year, and they got really excited when they heard a movie is coming out. Now, if I could only find a way to get my almost-three-year-old to actually sit still through a movie...
