Compassionate, Honest, Brave and Funny… like Charlie Brown

Feb 25, 2016 | IsaacHanson

So the day after my 35th birthday I wrote the following blog, but I never posted it… but now, I am.  I hope you enjoy it.

Nov. 18th 2015-
So for my birthday this year I was not quite sure what I wanted to do.  A night out at the bar was not what I needed this year, although it can be very fun to cut loose, I had had plenty of those over the last month or so while being on the road, what I really needed for my birthday was to hang out with my wife and our 3 little clones (also known as our kids).  So that’s what I did.  The wife and I went for a long lunch date and then after school we took the kids to a movie… of my choice and I had a great time.  I would honestly say that I had one of my best birthdays in years.  Simple pleasures really are the best!

You see, when you travel and play music all your life, like I have, it allows a little extra perspective on the grass on each side of the proverbial fence, and I am grateful for that.  It reminds you over and over again that life is fleeting, but friends, family and the actions you leave in your wake as you walk (or run) through life are all that really matter.  I’ve felt this way for most of my life, but my years of work and play only make it clearer to me that being a great singer, guitar player or songwriter is not even half as important as being a good dad, and that is my favorite job (and I think a much harder one at that).

That is where my movie choice comes in, I picked The Peanuts.  I know it might sound corny to some of you, that on my 35th birthday I decided that the thing I most wanted to do was go see a movie with my kids… but I really did want to see it and I was not disappointed!  There was something very peaceful about the movie over all, not a hyper slapstick movie, or a crood joke fest.  The Peanuts is a simple story about being a kid and the sometimes awkward process of growing up… or of being a dog with a hilariously elaborate imagination (which is some of the best stuff in the movie… just like in the comics).  There were lots of funny moments, heart felt scenes and moments of where you just felt bad for "good old Charlie Brown", but the thing that I like the most about the movie was the ending.  I have written out the scene below so that you can enjoy it too.

(Start Scene)
Charlie Brown (CB) runs up to the open school bus door just in time to find the Little Red-haired Girl (LRG) getting onto the bus

LRG:  OH!  Hi Charlie Brown.

CB:  You remembered my name?

LRG:  Of course I did.

CB:  Before you leave there’s something I really need to know.  Why, out of all the kids in our class would you wanna be partners with me?

LRG:  That’s easy.  Because I’ve seen the kind of person you are.

CB:  (Confused) An insecure, wishy washy  failure?

(Girl in the crowd nods in agreement)

LRG:  That’s not who you are at all.  I like the compassion you showed for your sister at the talent show, the honesty you showed at the assembly and at the dance, you were brave, and funny.

(Snoopy sighs with a grin and giggles)

LRG:  And what you did for me, doing the book report while I was away was so sweet of you.

(Lucy sniffles and smiles, showing her softer side)

LRG:  So when look at you, I don’t see a failure at all.  You have all the qualities that I admire.

(End Scene)

So in short I really hope that you see this movie if you haven’t already and if you have, I hope you rent it or buy it, because I would love to see a lot more movies coming out that were like The Peanuts because, I want to be Compassionate, Honest, Brave and Funny, like Charlie Brown!

Sincerely,  -ISAAC “Old Man” Hanson

Well said. I've loved Charlie Brown & Snoopy since I was a kid. I was kind of worried when the movie came out that it would be really modernized and lose the greatness that Charles Schulz had put into the characters all these years. But it was fantastic for many of the reasons you pointed out & did not disappoint.

Stories from Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang have always captured the essence of childhood innocence and the importance of talking things out among friends.  The characters' honesty about what is at the heart of the matter is endearing, and is why these characters have stood the test of time.   Their simplicity speaks volumes.

Isaac, I'd say you're already Compassionate, Honest, Brave, and Funny, but birthdays are a time of renewal, so I commend you for looking forward and building on those characteristics.  I think you gave yourself more than just a trip to the movies; the gift of self-reflection and introspection is a gift that touches the soul.

Gotta be honest...it's impossible to read this and not smile. You broke the rule number one in the movies history which is telling the end scene, but who cares, that was beautiful. Thank you for the review, I'll definitely watch the movie one of these days!

Seeing a movie with your family on your birthday is not corny at all, it's a lovely way to spend your birthday, that's the first blog I've read of yours Isaac, thanks keep them coming.

How nice of you to drop in so unexpectedly, Isaac!  You should do it more often.  We somehow missed the movie when it came out so we'll have to rent it sometime.  It looks very cute.  I think you can rest assured that you are all of those things you admire in Charlie Brown, and maybe you're even a little bit like his dog, too. ;)

I'm glad you had just the sort of birthday you liked best last year.  Thanks for that sweet blog and movie recommendation...

That is not corny AT ALL.  I actually saw it opening weekend--and I don't even have kids!

I don't have an active career like you do, but as I grow older, I realize that I'm starting to prefer more "low key" celebrations.  So much to the point where I don't even really like to receive gifts on the holidays--I just prefer to spend time and celebrate.  To me, creating the memories and spending the time are becoming worth a lot more than receiving the "stuff" or stressing over the party.  The older you get, the less it takes to make you happy.  And that's okay.

So don't feel "corny" or "afraid to say" how you spent any time of your day.  What matters is at the end of the day, you were happy.  Period.

And PS--How bout after ALL THAT, and we STILL don't know the Little Red-Haired Girl's name!  Lol

PPS--and by "active career," I mean I sit behind a desk all day, not on the go all the time lol

Hate to say it...but...I think you're already THERE, Old Man! Of course as human beings we all want to be just more than what we are and better than we are. Provided we have the spirit that is always striving for self improvement and a much better quality of life with ourselves and those that surround us and truly make our lives complete.

You are honest (witnessed this a couple times myself!), you are more than just compassionate (also had the opportunity and blessing to watch this unfold), you are certainly brave (I think I speak for all of us when I say...who else will speak their mind to a crowd full of people without a speck of fear of public backlash? All because of his own convictions on a matter!), and last but not least... WHO ARE WE KIDDING? You're just about the sweetest and funniest person. The best part is...whether you try it or not...you are who you are. And...you are our very own Charlie Brown!

Considering The Peanuts Gang has been my favorite thing ever growing up, so much so that I've owned about 30 different stuffed versions of Snoopy...this blog ties a lot of loose ends of all of the little and wonderful things I find in my journey through life.

sounds like the perfect way to spend your birthday, surrounded by those you love and who love you :)  such beautiful words, so heartfelt.

I was a Peanuts fan as a kid, but I haven't seen the movie, as I didn't have any young kids to take with me.  Now you've inspired me to watch it, thanks for sharing Isaac xo

Spending quality time with your family on your birthday sounds like the best possibly way to celebrate it. The Peanut movie sounds like a great one to watch with your wife and kids.  Having drinks for your birthday is always fun but it's good to change it up each year and do something fun and memorable.

Isaac, I think you already have all the qualities that Charlie Brown shows us in this movie.

I can't. <3 Isaac - I love you. I officially need Isaac blogs in my life on a regular basis. Please and thank you.

Sometimes, I just can not get over how sincere you are Isaac. One thing I have always believed is that a movie never has to be rated PG-13 or above to be good. I love movies like "The Lion King", "101 Dalmatians", and "How To Train Your Dragon". Sure I like things like the "Avengers", "Divergent", "The Hunger Games", and more recently, I have gotten into the "Terminator", but it is good to watch a clean movie where you do not have to self-sensor. I love to watch movies with my family. I watch crime shows with my mom, and Daddy and I watch things like the History Channel. I am glad to hear that you spent your birthday with your family. It is better than spending a night at the bar by a long shot! I am not going to sugar coat it, I do not like drinking at all, so I do not like MMMHops, but I like you guys as people, and I know you are really good people. You have been my roll models, and in some way or another, I have looked up to ya'll from the time I was 2. I love how you are family oriented. I love that you are genuine. And I am proud to call Hanson my favorite band. I know what I said about MMMHops is not that popular, but I am too honest to say anything different. Plus, I am not even 21, so yeah... I am a rule follower. Also, one suggestion, go back and watch all of the shows you watched as a kid with your kids. You would probably really enjoy it.

I love Isaac Hanson, have for 18 years and i knew even before this post i was going to be an Isaac girl for the rest of my life and reading this amazing blog - has only further fueled the fire. I quite enjoyed reading your blog and i hope that is not the only time you do one. I am still wiping my eyes and reading it for the 3rd time. You are an amazing person.

What a lovely post. I don't know why but it made me think of the Foo Figthers song 'My Hero'. I guess it's because you were referring to how what matters, after all, is what can be perceived as 'the ordinary' in our lives. And while it's easy to be seduced by fame and success, those moments with the people you love are a lot more important.

Compassion, courage, honesty and humour. Four of the qualities that have been evident in all that you and Taylor and Zac have done. They dont come easily, although a loving, caring and corageous upbringing are sure to sow the seeds.

You convinced me from day one in 2000, that you were equipped with an authenticity and deeply honest humanity. This was the cement between and running through the music and humour and performance and it is what has always moved me.

There is courage and honesty in everything you have ever done. There is humility in the humour and compassion in your art.

That you have managed to retain these attitudes and aptitudes through all of your career encounters, ups and downs, is credit to you and a sign of how deep they run in you all.

Professional to a T and human, humble and honourable with it.

The heart of Hanson.
