Hanson, whose debut album sold millions through major label Universal, has officially become an Indie act today after their new album 'Underneath' debuted at number one on the Billboard Independent Chart in the USA.

The now independent Hanson didn't start out making this album with the intention of it being Indie. They were still signed to Universal when they began work on the record but had a number of false starts which kept sending them back to square one.

For starters, Ric Ocasek was recruited as producer. That fell in a heap when the former Cars frontman tried to take them in a different direction. Working with Universal also meant compromising their sound. "We have a passion for making music," says Zac Hanson in a statement, "and having our own label gives us the opportunity to make the music we want and deliver it directly to the fans."
