I am not sure how the physics of this works, but the 200 or so screaming girls at the Hanson show at Bricks sounded remarkably similar to 10,000 screaming girls in the Delta Center. Whether or not the brothers Hanson are ever able to draw 10,000 again is an interesting question; the answer will be based more on the fickle nature of teenagers than the quality of the music. On that score, Hanson is certainly worthy, and this acoustic gig proved it. The trio's three-part harmonies are truly impressive, leading to remarkable versions of the new "Penny & Me," a song that should be a hit, and a cover of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's "Teach Your Children," with the three brothers huddled around one microphone, accompanied only by eldest brother Isaac's guitar. Zac, the youngest, has become a powerful drummer, and he did a solo song on piano in a falsetto you would never expect from a 17-year-old, while middle brother Taylor switched between piano and guitar throughout, moving from ballads like "Never Let Go" to the lead vocal on signature song "MMMBop." These boys can play, sing and show respect for rock history (they covered Eddie Cochran and Little Richard in addition to CSNY). They are probably too good to ever get on the radio again.
