"Underneath" - set for release in the Spring of 2004, is an epic, more-than-three-years-in-the-making, hugely accomplished organic alternative guitar rock/pop oriented album, packed with fourteen truly great original songs. Crammed with catchy melodies, plaintive piano playing and the kind of three part vocal harmonies that only brothers (like the Bee Gees) can achieve, 'Underneath' is set to firmly establish Hanson's credentials as Adult Rock Artists.
Raised in Tulsa (and for short periods Trinidad, Ecuador and Venezuela), by music-loving parents, Hanson's first live performance as a band was back in 1992, when drummer Zac was only six years old. Hanson are the complete opposite of the current crop of pop-idol processed wannabees - they have been performing, writing and recording as an organic group of inspired musicians for over a decade now.
The three boys grew up singing along to their parent's classic rock, R&B, soul and gospel albums and in 1997, Hanson topped the UK and US charts with an infectious pop single about the pure joy of living, "MmmBop." Taken from the band's Middle of Nowhere album, the song led to three 1998 Grammy nominations for the band, including Record of the Year, Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals. Middle of Nowhere soared to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, spawning a second Top 10 single in "I Will Come to You" and went on to sell over 8 million copies.
"Underneath" represents the group's most accomplished effort yet, mixing their love of lush melodies with a production that leaves the rough edges in, but is still larger-than-life when called for.
If the past is any indication, is all set to inspire yet another host of musicians, let alone every fan of sublimely crafted, classic, soaring, timeless, popular pop-rock music.
