EIGHT years after they rose to fame with their infectious hit single MmmBop, the Hanson brothers - Isaac, Zac and Taylor - are back in Australia to promote a new album.

The trio will show off tunes from their third studio album, Underneath, and a swag of old favourites when they play Seagulls' Stardust Theatre on Wednesday night.

The brothers spent three years making the record, which they produced independently after reaching a creative crossroads with their record label. They say producing it themselves allowed them to maintain their creative vision, although they did work with several collaborators.

Underneath, which includes the single Penny and Me, mixes Hanson's love of lush melodies with a production that leaves the rough edges in, but is still larger-than-life when called for.

"We wrote songs with a definite flavour," says Taylor.

"Our goal was that every part that was played had a clear purpose to make this album more dynamic," says Zac.

MmmBop scored the band three 1998 Grammy nominations - Record of the Year, Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group.

* Hanson and support act Zinc play the Stardust Theatre, at Seagulls Club, on Wednesday at 7.30pm. The show is an over-18s event and tickets are $63.
