Although the boys have grown up and display a richer, more mature sound, they haven't lost their characteristic youthful spirit. What I've always liked about the Hanson brothers is their lightheartedness, real talent and faith to their rock roots - all of which are on display in this album.
The first single, "Penny and Me," is the sort of carefree anthem of love in which Hanson specializes.
"Get up and Go" and "Lost Without Each Other" are fun songs with a quick beat that show the band's playful side. "Go" encourages some wild teen abandon, and living it up while you can.
Despite the cheerful nature of these songs, they never sound like the over-produced, sugary pop of Hanson's peers.
Nor are any of the songs drenched in teen angst. "Underneath" is a melancholy ballad of broken love that doesn't drift into corniness but rather showcases the band's earnestness.
Hanson broke away from a major record label to create its own, which is proof of the integrity and sincerity of the group's music.
"The middle brother, Taylor Hanson, delivers most of the solo vocal performances. His clear, expressive voice mixes well with the harmonies and solid piano, guitar and drum skills of his brothers. The Hanson brothers wrote and performed all of the songs, and even produced a few of them.
Don't be put off by the fact that it's Hanson, the band once mistaken for pretty girls. The long golden locks and high voices are gone, replaced by thoughtful, more developed music that can really brighten your day.
