Hanson's back with Underneath!!!. By Fabiola Ãvila.
After a four year absence , the band from Tulsa Oklahoma, are back! With new material that promises to be a hit.
Exa: What did you do after you finished the This Time Around Tour?
Well, we were doing a lot of stuff, we finished the tour, we started to prepare our third album Underneath, we changed our manager and record label, in fact we created our own record label. We wrote a lot of songs, around 80 songs, and recorded 50 of them. It was a combination of things, but we are really happy to be back on stage. We also did an acoustic
tour, and the fans liked it much.
Exa: what were the reasons for you changing your record label?
Like we said, we decided to separate from our former record label and create our own. The reason for this was because we did not feel we were supported by them and we wanted to make our own decisions without having to ask for anyone's permission. There is no manager that understands the way an artist works.
Exa: How do you guys feel by being back on stage?
Wonderful! We are really happy, doing what we like the most, and we could carry on doing this for the rest of our lives
The guys took a long time to introduce their new album, time in which Taylor got married and became a dad, while Zac and Isaac both found girlfriends and wrote a bunch of new songs.
EXA: Why did you decide to call the new album Underneath?
Hanson: We chose that name, because it’s also the name of the first song we wrote for the new record. We believe that it’s a very powerful song, in fact, it is the main song of the album; it is a melody that reflects the essence of the LP. It is also very connected to the meaning of the word: what’s under the surface, because we wanted people to know what’s inside
of Hanson, of what we do and the music we make.
EXA: The first single (of this album) is “Penny and Meâ€, what is this song about?
Hanson: It’s a song that we like a lot because it’s about not being afraid to be who you are, no matter who you are with; even if it’s that person you have a crush on or are in love with, or your family and friends, it doesn’t matter as long as you don’t hide your true personality because that’s what’s good about life. Music is something that lets you dream,
have songs that remind you of someone, songs that make you feel good. That’s what Penny (and Me) is about: your family, your friends, a love, the memories. It has a more rock & roll vibe, without losing the essence of what we are.
EXA: Which is your favorite song in the album?
Hanson: It´s hard, because, you know, we like all of them! It’s just that, because we write all of the songs, there are a lot of them that we can relate to.
EXA: In these last years, who has influenced you the most, musically?
Hanson: It’s always been music from the 60’s and 80’s, because it’s the music we grew up with and the music we love.
“WE’RE ROCKERS AT HEART…â€
Thanks to the creation of their own record label, these talented guys can experiment in order to create their music. Rock and Roll is their passion and Underneath is a reflection of that.
EXA: What are the main differences between your three albums?
Hanson: Middle of Nowhere was more pop, with some R&B in it; it was, maybe, a way to be known. This Time Around was full of soul and blues, with slight touches of pop. Now, with Underneath we believe that we’re offering something a little more acoustic, like a little collection of what our country is, with some rock and roll.
EXA: Why did you use those musical styles?
Hanson: We don’t know, it was something natural that just happened. If we knew why, we’d tell you! It was just a different way of doing things; we grew up and so did our music in all aspects.
EXA: Do you think of Hanson as a “boy band
Hanson: No, we’re a rock and roll band, we know exactly what we do and this is the music we like. Maybe there are people who will not like this, but we can’t sing something that doesn’t go with us. This is the style we like and want to keep playing.
EXA: How will the new show be like?
Hanson: We have two kinds of shows: the regular one, that’s with all the instruments and stuff, and we have another one that’s completely acoustic, with guitars, piano and some other instruments. We also offer our fans a lot of new songs, our old hit singles, some covers and little musical experiments that we do. The shows are full of rock and roll, music, and of course, lots of fun! It is very likely that when we go to Mexico in March, we’ll be presenting a combination of both so that you guys don’t miss a thing.
