Nigh 10 years down the road, the Hanson boys have defied the poor odds for kiddie bands' survival past one-hit-wonderdom. They're still here.
Older, yes. But at Avalon Thursday night, they seemed barely so, and even their audience seemed frozen in time, as the majority of the crowd comprised vociferously enthusiastic pre- and teenaged girls. Hanson has discovered the fountain of youth and the brothers share it with their fans via the mature Middle American muddle of r & b, rock, electric blues and gospel that forms their songs.
Taylor, his hair long and unkempt, hit the keys and sang up a storm on opener ``Dancin' in the Wind.'' Older brother/guitarist Isaac looked hip with his shorn-short Mohawk. And Zac, the baby one, pounded the drums and looked, well, like the baby one.
With the brothers augmented by a bassist and a guitarist-keyboardist - more to fill out the sound into kick-ass rock than give any flourish - both Zac and Taylor took turns at the piano to sing solo. In a talent competition, it would have been hard to split the difference and find a winner: Both laid down fine, soulful voice over beautifully wrought piano work.
But, oddly, among the songs the band pulled from its three CD releases, the most memorable moments were when Hanson came on like the Blues Brothers, knocking out the bar-band fave ``Gimme Some Lovin' '' and then when it came on like those cute Hanson brothers, adding Romper Room rocker ``Mmmbop.''
