Those young boys, who surprised the world in 1997 with their catchy hit “Mmmbop”, as all suspected, grew up. They didn’t grow just in age but this maturity has permeated their music as well. This possibly has been the motive for their disappearance from the public eye for several years. While teen pop prepared to destroy everything that crossed its path, Hanson opted for a return to blues and classic rock, without betraying their pop roots. Then the mainstream turned its back on them.

The show put on by the trio on Friday night gathered a good amount of fanatic, adolescent girls (between 15 and 18 years old) with a thirst for pop. Curiously enough, the group performed unplugged: Isaac on acoustic guitar and occasional vocal, operated as a sound wall. Taylor, the unquestionable foreman, was in charge of the lead vocals while he alternated between guitar, harmonica and the piano (which is without a doubt his strength). The great surprise of the night was Zac, who demonstrated his multi-instrumental aspect: as great as he was as percussionist, he was also seen taking up the guitar and behind the piano.

The trio sounded tight and their good dynamic on stage was notable. There was also time for solo performances by the brothers who knew how to shine on their own without any difficulty. It’s not hard to believe that in a few years one of them could encounter luck as a modern Neil Young. Nevertheless, their intimate atmosphere could cost them power: above all one has to keep in mind that not all the instruments were always there sounding 100%, with the exception of Isaac’s guitar. Given the collective public hysteria (that despite the somewhat excessive screams setting themselves up as protagonists of the evening by singing all the tracks in chorus and adding fuel and vitality to the show) reaffirms that their choice of an acoustic setup was perhaps not appropriate. Some of the songs themselves required some silence, that despite successive requests from Taylor, was not obtained.

They performed a collection of songs from their three studio produced albums that included recollection of their classic hits from the first “era” (“Where’s the Love”, “This Time Around” and “MmmBop”) and the presentation of new songs from Underneath, including “Lost without Each Other” and “Hey”. The good musicians, as it is in this case, simply played good music. It is comforting to know that in the wonderful and cruel world of pop there is still room (no matter how small it may be) for an interesting and different proposal like Hanson.

Aquellos jovencitos que en 1997 sorprendieron al mundo con su pegadizo “Mmmbop”, como todos sospechaban, crecieron. Y no solo crecieron en edad sino que la madurez impregnó también su música. Probablemente, este haya sido el motivo por el cual el grupo desapareció del ojo público por unos cuantos años. Mientras el teen pop se dispuso a arrasar todo lo que se cruzaba en su camino, Hanson optó por un vuelco al blues y el rock clásico, sin traicionar sus raíces pop. Y el mainstream les dio la espalda.

El show que realizó el trío el viernes por la noche reunió a una buena cantidad de fanáticas adolescentes (entre 15 y 18 años) con sed de pop. Curiosamente, el grupo se presentó en formato unplugged: Isaac en guitarra acústica y ocasionales voces, operaba como pared de sonido. Taylor, frontman indiscutido, se hizo cargo de las voces principales mientras alternaba entre la guitarra, la armónica y el piano (su fuerte, sin lugar a dudas). La gran sorpresa de la noche fue Zac, quien mostró su faceta multiinstrumental: si bien su puesto era como percusionista, también se lo pudo ver empuñando la guitarra y detrás del piano.

El trío sonaba ajustado y era notable la buena dinámica on stage. También hubo espacio para performances solistas de los tres hermanos que supieron brillar por cuenta propia sin ninguna dificultad. No sería extraño que en un par de años alguno de ellos encarne a una suerte de Neil Young moderno. Sin embargo, el clima intimista también los hacía perder potencia: sobre todo si se tiene en cuenta que no siempre estaban todos los instrumentos - a excepción de la guitarra de Isaac - sonando al 100%. Sumado esto a la histeria colectiva del público (que a pesar de sus gritos algo desmedidos se erigieron como el gran protagonista de la noche, coreando todos los temas y agregando combustible y vitalidad al show) reafirma que la elección del formato acústico quizá no haya sido la más adecuada. La mismas canciones a veces requerían de una cuota de silencio que, a pesar de los sucesivos pedidos de Taylor, nunca pudo obtenerse.

Los temas presentaron un recorrido por sus tres discos de estudio que incluyó un recuerdo de sus hits clásicos de la primera época (“Where’s the love”, “This time around” y “Mmmbop”) y la presentación de las nuevas canciones de Underneath del cual se destacaron “Lost without wach other” y “Hey”. Y los buenos músicos, como en este caso, simplemente hacen buena música. Es reconfortante saber que en el maravilloso y cruel mundo del pop todavía hay lugar (por más pequeño que sea) para una propuesta interesante y diferente como Hanson.
