The FUTURE IS Coming!

We are getting very close on a new design of Hanson.net, and I thought this might be a nice time to share a few screen caps of the new look, so maybe all of you can feel some of the excitment I do about the new design.

There are three major things we wanted to do with the new design, that hopefully will make it more enjoyable to spend time on the site.

  • Mobile Friendly
    • The current design is not very enjoyable to look at from your phone or tablet, or for that matter is it easy to browse if you have any visual difficulties. The new  design is very high contrast, and browser responsive. That means whatever size your viewing window is, you get a customized experience. Phone check, Tablet check, small laptop check, giant desktop computer.... Get with the times man!
  • Streamlined
    • We want it to be easy to find whatever you're looking for, music, news, blog, concerts, events. We are sliming down the navigation, eliminating content divisions, and instead putting like with like. We think having fewer, fuller sections will give everyone a better experience.
  • Clean Palette
    • The last thing is the look. We have 25+ years of designs. Fonts, Photos and textures that all have to live together in one place. Between May and June alone we are celebrating HANSON Day 2020, Back To The Island 2021 on-sale, This Time Around's 20th anniversary and Shout It Out hitting the big 10 mark. It may seem plain to some, but having a clean palette that can host whatever art ideas come next was a big goal and we're feeling good about where we ended up.

We are by no means finished. Internal testing has just begun, followed by small batches of members joining the test team in June and then launch... well rather than using the S word (soon), I am just going to say the site will launch when it's ready.

I'd love to do some testing as I have quite a knack for detail and when I used to do programming would often do well with various test cases. In either case, a couple of suggestions that I'm hoping might already be in the works: when you log in to have it remember you on trusted devices. I hate when I see a link to new content somewhere and I have to log in again if I haven't been on the site in say a few hours or so, and it gets a bit annoying. I know it seems small but it's actually one of my biggest pet peeves with the site as a member.

I'd also suggest since you want to reduce categories to keep a sort of media section with audio, video and pictures. With a title like gallery I'd assume it's only pictures, and I see on the screenshot it actually also includes video. A simple renaming of the section might work, and then just add an audio section (ie the current category is better). It'd be pretty cool if this section also automatically pulled any media from blog posts (pictures, audio or video). And the Hanson Time Podcasts would be in the audio section, along with music, reporter interviews, etc. Ideally members could listen to the members EPs here digitally (or at least we could get the new one as a digital download instead of or in addition to a physical CD).

The store: a small detail would be to have the store save cart content and/or have the option to add items to wishlists. Another useful feature would be to be able to buy stuff for others, including membership (either by entering their username when purchasing or by having gift cards).NNot to have to pick the color on an item even when there's only 1 available. To be able to search the store, and to have tags like "members-only" or "HDay" or "vinyl" etc.

I hope this is useful/helpful! :)

Exactly @Melissa82686! In 2014 we lost the media page which had hundreds of previous concerts etc on it.

Now, we're losing forums and news too.

Not to mention the streaming page went for a loop a while back... although sure - it provided problems for some and quite frankly -- video blogs are more easy to navigate

Isn't the future always coming? That's why it is the future. If it was here then it would be the present.

I've been wondering if the Forums would have features similar to Facebook and Instagram to where we could Like/Love people's posts instead of making a whole post on our own just saying "@someone, I agree".  Also, will the Forums have indented segments for when we reply to posts so that a thread forms?

Also, will we be able to edit our own posts, for when we misspell/leave out a word or just don't like our wording and don't realize it until we've hit SUBMIT?  Similarly, can we delete our own post if we realize we don't want that out in the world until after we've hit SUBMIT?

I'm excited about the new site too, and keep thinking about what would make it awesome, so here's one more small suggestion :D

When you click on a link that takes you e.g. to this post, and then log in after that, it should redirect you back to the page/link you were just on (especially if that was members-only content and that's why you logged in), instead of back to the homepage. I imagine the login will be a sort of dropdown/popup type thing, given that what we see now on the previews is a button at the top/in the menu? If so, then this should be relatively simple to implement I believe.
