The Beach Boys, Paul Simon, Leon Russell

Sep 11, 2015 | HANSON

We are a few days into rehearsal for the Roots & Rock 'N’ Roll tour now with a host of songs already under our belt.  Things are sounding really great, but it is truly a study in great music each day deconstructing songs and breaking down the parts for each arrangement.  We have already tackled some difficult songs trying to do justice to Paul Simon and the Beach Boys, but we have many more to go.  One thing is for sure though, every song seems to inspire smiles all around the room. Last week we shared clips from the new R&R EP by putting them into the store product, but tonight at 6PM CT we will be sharing more than just a clip as we share documentary style stream from the making of the R&R EP for Hanson.net members.  If you are not able to watch it tonight, we will be looping it all weekend on the members only streaming page of Hanson.net.

Hanson have learnt the art of telepathy. I've been listening to the Beach Boys all week *shakes fist*

I'm so excited to hear all these cover songs.  And what a great photo of Taylor feeling the music.

I had kind of resigned myself that I wasn't going to the R&R tour and I'd be ok, but now that they've mentioned the Beach Boys I'm sad again. I'm not even the biggest BB fan but I've always, always thought that Hanson are so similar to them in so many ways, and hearing Hanson doing BB harmonies would be fantastic.

Now I'm going to sulk again.

PS - @Cecilia @Suze - I was listening to Graceland just a few weeks ago. Doubly sad.

@Paola @Cecillia I'm such a sucker for singer song writers (Only thing missing from this tour would be a little James Taylor.)

Posted Sep 12, 2015   10:38:34 PM

Oooh I would love them to cover James Taylor. I have always loved his songs but not so much his voice, so to hear Hanson do his stuff would be sweet. Imagine Isaac singing Carolina in my Mind? Be still my heart.

Re: Beach Boys I agree it seems like a natural fit. I am nervous at the idea of them taking on God Only Knows and doing it justice. That song has never quite sounded "right" to me in anyone's voice but Brian Wilson's. Wouldn't it Be Nice, though, I'm all for. Or even Fun Fun Fun or Little Surfer Girl.

Call me shallow but I'd love to hear them sing some BB candyfloss like 'Barbara Ann' or 'Surfin' USA'.

I was planning to start a #nerdingout thread just a couple of days ago, before I saw the newsletter in which Hanson hacked into my thoughts *shakes fist*. The gist of what I wanted to say was that, had Hanson been famous in the 60s like the BB, they would have been hailed as pop geniuses. "Mmmbop" has nothing to envy to songs like 'Surfin USA', in fact it has a deeper meaning.
The BB started as surf music, and then came out with 'Pet Sounds' which is universally considered a classic album. Hanson did 'Mmmbop' and then came out with 'This Time Around' and 'The Walk'. Need I say more? Another case of injustice when it comes to the perception of this band.

I've never, ever been a big Beach Boys fan but, I admit one of their songs done with Hanson harmonies 'would be nice'...probably not my favorite, though...

And yes to a James Taylor cover,...(if they decide to do something mellower).  My vote would be for "Fire and Rain" or maybe "Your Smiling Face" though I also like "Up On the Roof" and "Handy Man" by him.  <---Those last two are covers...

Ooohhhh Taylor singing fire and Rain  ..only because it has a version of my name in the lyrics... so I'd be like TH was ALMOST Hahahaha singing  my name (Life goals ;) #YaKnowImportantStuff  :D :D (Clearly they have picked all the covers for the tour, but   wishful thinking !)

@Paola re: your "nerding out" topic: I agree with the sentiment that Hanson are criminally overlooked because of how people perceive MMMBop. Buuuut...

Brian Wilson is considered an undisputed (at least to my knowledge) creative genius because he did entirely new things on Pet Sounds--the way he put songs together and the weird stuff he did in the studio to recreate what he was hearing in his head. I love Hanson, but I don't think they have earned that distinction yet. Pet Sounds was so experimental in nature at the time, and while Hanson definitely evolved on their later albums, I don't think TTA or The Walk blazed new trails musically for anybody but them. They are GOOD, solid pop-rock records, and totally worthy of praise, but neither one is groundbreaking in the context of what was happening in music when they came out.

That being said, Pet Sounds was a commercial flop when released and only really appreciated in retrospect, right? So, who knows, maybe I'm being shortsighted and TTA will be hailed as a masterpiece 20 years from now ;)

@Kelly I hear what you're saying and you're right in that respect. I'm not a musician but I'm guessing they haven't done anything groundbreaking musically but - their split from DJ and subsequent move as an indie band in those days was really groundbreaking, from a business point of view. They tapped into the whole online concept way before it was common to even have a website.

I wonder if there can be any true experimentation in music anymore? I mean, everything is now possible - you just need the right software. I remember watching a documentary on The Who and the way they got those weird sound effects on Baba O'Riley, for example, was really innovative back then. Now a kid with Garage Band could do it. It's kind of sad in a way.
