hey everyone! just thought i'd share a small idea that a group of young adults from my church have come up with: we have done two campaigns in support of Blood:Water Mission (www.bloodwatermission.com) already, which is an incredible organization (started by Jars of Clay) that is working towards the goal of building 1000 clean water wells in africa. the campaigns we were doing are called "2 Weeks of Sacrifice", where you give up all beverages for 2 weeks except water, keeping the money you would have spent on coffee, juice, soda, alcohol, etc. and then donating it at the end of the two weeks. the first time we raised $674, and the second time we raised $221. (not bad for people our age who are broke most of the time.) the money that has been raised and given towards the wells is AWESOME, but when we take a look around us, there is a sad lack of knowledge of the situation in africa. clean water is one of the most basic necessities that we take for granted here in the US, but it is incredibly scarce in africa. grandparents, adults, and children walk miles everyday to retrieve as much dirty water as they can carry, missing school and wasting otherwise precious time. this unclean water causes fatal diseases (such as diarrhea) and causes the rapid degeneration of the bodies of those who are living with HIV/AIDS. anyway, our idea to raise awareness and support for Blood:Water is to take a barefoot walk around town carrying jugs of water ourselves, passing out information and collecting money for Blood:Water. this is also another way to "take the walk". i was really happy when i heard hanson would be donating money on behalf of people who take walks this fall, because that's when we are planning to do this!
i encourage you to check out Blood:Water Mission's website & some of their videos on youtube, and just wanted to share this idea in case any of you get inspired to do something similar!
also, 2 books i recommend checking out: "hope in the dark" by jeremy cowart & jena lee "the irresistible revolution" by shane claiborne -- both are life-changing! 10.29.08 - thank you SO much for reporter!! jan 17-22 - ROCK BOAT IX |

I participate in Blood: Water mission at my church too! I think they said like $10.00 will support a lifetime of drinking water for one child. Its really great. We raised a lot of money last year for this cause. Jaime 21 shows. 8 walks. 1 M&G. My son: Took the walk x2 |

My church just posted a bulletin about doing this again this year. They actually organized a walk like I said! How exciting! They are walking the distance it usually takes a person to walk to get clean water in africa. I think its like a mile and a half. I can't wait to do it! I'll let ya'll know how it turns out!
